VOMO ISLAND FIJI

If you’re looking for a premium island escape that ticks all the boxes then I have a suggestion. Book the next flight to Fiji and check-in to VOMO. You won’t regret it.

Bring your significant other. Bring the kids too, because VOMO is that rarity – a family-friendly resort that offers true luxury. There are activities to keep everyone stimulated all day long, or simply lazing in the sun, if that’s your holiday goal. The food and accommodation is out of this world. And it has that sense of tranquility you only experience when you’re tucked away on a tropical island of your own.

The best way to arrive is via a short 15 minute Island Hoppers Helicopter transfer. We have used them many times and they are our preferred operator in Fiji, the service is great - they will meet you on arrival and whisk you to their private lounge just moments away. It’s also a nice lead-in to the experience ahead where you’ll be living it up in style.

On VOMO there are palatial residences for large families or groups of friends, plus boutique villas for couples on romantic getaways, all with beachfront or ocean views. Each villa is cleverly located to ensure privacy so you never feel overlooked by your neighbours. You could settle in for a blissful few days and never leave your private paradise – but that would be a shame, because you’d miss out on so much of what the island has to offer.

For a start there are palm-fringed white sand beaches and turquoise waters begging to be explored. There are superb scuba dive spots just minutes away from the shore. For the littlest travellers there’s an entire Kids’ Village open from 9am till 9pm, with caring staff on hand to keep the good times flowing. For the grown-ups, there’s gourmet dining and wonderful experiences on offer, such as a private island champagne picnic. And at least once during your stay, you should book dinner on the beach.

My favourite evening spot was The Rocks Bar, located on the island’s western tip. Nothing beats watching the sun go down at the end of a perfect day, ‘rocktail’ in hand. To make a good thing even better, the management are adding a much-anticipated adults-only infinity pool which will create more of a luxe beach club vibe. A fantastic future addition to the resort that will set a new standard for the area.

There’s another ‘only on VOMO’ experience you should try, and that’s the Mount Vomo charity run. The island’s owners had the excellent idea of raising money for Cure Kids by charging guests a modest sum for a dawn run up the hillside. There’s an online leader board, and if you need a further incentive, the year’s fastest time will win a five-night return holiday to VOMO.

So far they’ve raised $25,000 for charity.

At the end of the day’s action – or lazing – there’s the superlative comfort of your villa to return to. Ours was smartly designed to maximise the sense of space, in a style that might be described as ‘beach chic.’ Think native wood floors, plantation shutters and furnishings in earthy, neutral tones. There’s a level of attention to detail on VOMO that you don’t always find in resort rooms, with multiple USB chargers, Bose speakers and good wi-fi. Bathrooms are spacious – always a good sign – with separate his and hers vanities, a roomy shower and a freestanding bath. We also spent a lot of time on our private beachfront patio, which was equipped with loungers for daily sun basking.

The days passed quickly but linger in the memory. When you can wake up in paradise, relax in the beauties of nature, dine on some of Fiji’s finest cuisine (with a wine list to match), and watch the sun go down with a superb cocktail in hand, you know you’re somewhere very special. It’s that private island thing. Seclusion, opulence and a beautiful location.
